HOLY COW are hockey playoffs INSANE! The Bruins played Game 1 of their first round series against the Florida Panthers on Monday and I swear my heart has not stopped racing.
Granted, there was a particularly heightened atmosphere. Patriots’ Day in Boston is always special, but this year was the 10th anniversary of the bombing. And the Bruins have broken literally every NHL record this year, so the anticipation has been building. The reality was on an other level. My husband and I were screaming so loudly we were concerned about our neighbors (who luckily are hockey fans, with a son likely to play in the NHL in a few years). My daughter texted that she and her girlfriend too, had been yelling so much they were concerned. They are in an apartment so, legit.
I am definitely a loud and passionate person. When the Red Sox were playing the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS, I had to wear sox (haha, that’s funny) on my hands as my clapping was waking up my then small children. My son told me at the time that I loved the Red Sox more than him. He might have had a point that season. And even though the Sox have not been as exciting in recent seasons, listening to games on the radio is a ritual that is part of my warm weather life. Once hockey and basketball season is over of course.
During the 80s I shared Celtics season tickets. One of my favorite gifts of all time was a Celtics jacket from my brothers. It was so beautiful. (I just googled one and they are considered vintage.) I did not wear it a lot as I thought it looked awful on me. I was so concerned with how I looked. What an idiot. That was then. In my mind, I am wearing it proudly today as I watch the Celtics in their playoff run. Thanks, boys. I love you.
There’s a long way to go in the NHL playoffs, but we are already planning out our days and nights around the Bs first round. If you need me, I’ll be the one in the too-small Bergeron sweater not giving a shit about how it looks.
ASIDE: I thought I had written about the excitement of hockey playoffs in the past, so went into the archives of the blog. I have been writing here since 2012! Wild.
